About Gina Klawitter & Figures in Fabric Sculptures

What are Figures in Fabric Sculptures?

  • Lightweight, fabric-formed sculptures molded directly from a live model’s body.

  • The draped, hardened fabric, highlighted with paint & glazes, gives the illusion of my sculptures having energy and motion.

How did you come up with this unique concept?

  • I have always enjoyed creating art of, with, and for people, including drawn and painted portraits, plus mixed media artwork that incorporated treasured personal belongings. And I told their stories through my art.

  • In 2017, my vision expanded. I had an epiphany of forming life-size figurative sculptures from live models by molding large sheets of fabric directly from their bodies.

  • It took 6 months experimenting with materials & technique to create what I had envisioned. And I continue to learn and improve with each new sculpture.

  • My unique art form blends 3 passions of mine: sculpting, painting, and collaborating with others.

What’s the process of creating this art?

  • Step 1: Concept & Design – For personal commissions, I learn from the subject/model how they see themselves and what they want to share. Then I design the pose and fabric draping to convey their essence and story.

  • Step 2: Sculpting Session – I place the fabric over the model based on the design concept. Once it has quickly hardened, I lift the sculpture off and prepare it for hanging.

  • Step 3: Painting & Glazing – I paint the sculpture and add layers of glazes for greater highlights and dimension.

  • Note: I also offer hand-painted reproductions of original sculptures using museum quality 3D technology, allowing the larger-sized sculptures to be enjoyed by people with smaller budgets or wall space.

Where does the sculpting process occur?

  • Sculpture-forming sessions take place at my studio, located in central Denver.

  • Or if necessary I will travel to a customer’s location.

What does this art mean to me?

• Figures in Fabric Sculptures truly come from me. I conceived and invented the formula and technique.

• When I’m working with a model and painting the sculpture, I sense a tangible & intangible connection to them. And they, in turn, feel a personal connection to me and the art.

  • Then, when I watch people observing my art, they tell me how it has deeply touched them in a very personal way.

  • I want my art to inspire people and create a sense of greater connection to themselves and our common humanity.

Where can you buy the art?

  • Directly from my website shop.

  • An original full-size sculpture & a selection of mini sculptures & jewelry are available at the Denver Art Museum’s gift shop. (I’m the first artist where they put original art in the store.)
