Three-dimensional fabric sculptures of a pregnant woman’s torso

provide a dramatic & artistic memento of a pregnancy

DENVER, Colo., April 14, 2021 – Gina Klawitter (www.gklawitter.com), a Denver artist who has pioneered the Figurative Fabric Sculpture art form, today announced the availability of custom-formed maternity belly sculptures using her innovative Figures in Fabric Sculpture process. Figures in Fabric Sculptures are lightweight, fabric-formed sculptures molded directly from a live model’s body. The draped, hardened fabric is highlighted with a variety of paint washes and glazes.

A maternity belly sculpture is a three-dimensional sculpture of a pregnant woman’s abdomen that serves as a keepsake of her pregnancy. These are sometimes called “belly casts.” Custom maternity belly sculptures that incorporate Ms. Klawitter’s unique Figures in Fabric Sculpture process take traditional maternity belly casting to a level far beyond what’s been available in the past.

The typical process of making a belly cast is to place wet plaster strips over a pregnant woman’s abdomen and then let it dry, with the finished piece decorated with lace, beads, and painted designs. This technique limits the casting scope and style.

In contrast, Figures in Fabric Sculptures for maternity belly sculptures provide much more coverage from shoulders through hips, and the draped fabric and mother-to-be can be positioned in multiple artful ways. This results in a maternity belly sculpture that is much more flowing, sophisticated & dramatic.

Once the fabric has quickly hardened, the maternity belly sculpture is carefully lifted off, and then highlighted with paint and glazes. The result is a spectacular, lightweight, three-dimensional sculpture of the mother-to-be’s torso that resembles a stone or metal sculpture but can be easily lifted and mounted to a wall.

“Custom maternity belly sculptures using my Figures in Fabric Sculpture process serve as a special keepsake of a pregnancy journey,” explained Gina Klawitter. “I have always enjoyed creating art of, with, and for people. This unique art form combines three elements that I love: working with people, sculpting, and painting.”
